Dear {Name},
I should not have said what I did about your child. It was not my place to say anything at all, much less the rude comment I made to {Name's} face.
I was startled to see {inappropriate behavior}, and I spoke without thinking. And rather than address the specific behavior, I called your child {negative quality}. The action was {negative quality}, but {Name} is not {negative quality}.
If you feel it would be appropriate, and not magnify the incident in {Name's} mind, I would love the opportunity to personally apologize. Children deserve to know that they are respected and valued, even when their behavior is not up to snuff. Name-calling is never OK and I crossed a line here.
Sincerely,
{Name}
